Cape Town: Monday, Nov. 30

Day 1: Only the beginning

Today was our first official day in Cape Town, after getting much-needed rest. We started the day with breakfast at the YMCA hostel (cafeteria style, yum ;)), followed by a great briefing on our activities for the next 12 days. The days are fairly balanced with educational/fun activities, and hard, eye-opening work. There are few moments of relaxation, which is perfect because any time I get a moment to myself I think about how much I miss my beautiful little girl.

Today we went to the Cape Town waterfront, which is a high tourist area filled with expensive shopping and restaurants. We did enjoy a fabulous meal, which was well needed after three days of airport/airplane food and hostel breakfast and lunch. I never knew a chicken salad could taste so good. We ended the night watching the sun set on the Atlantic Ocean from a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the city.

Last night was incredibly difficult talking with Kadence and Clark on Skype. She was great for the first 15-20 minutes, and then she started reaching at my face on the monitor and crying. The crying got worse, which of course put me into hysterics, so we had to get off. It caused me physical pain, it was terrible. I hope it gets better.

Here are some pix from today:

Table Mountain, within view pretty much anywhere in the city so far. Its name comes from its extremely flat top. We will be hiking it (2 hours up, 2 hours down) sometime in the next 12 days.

Me (taking photo from forward position), Tabitha, Heather, Susan and Ryan playing a game of human foosball against some "pros." Uh, yeah, we lost. But it was fun.

Me and Susan at Signal Point as the sun is setting.

The YMCA hostel where we are staying. They have asked me to help them with updating their website and putting together some materials and strategies for a couple capital campaigns - I can't wait to serve!

LaRue updates

I'm sorry I've been so lame about updating this lately. My computer has been on the fritz for about a month. I will have a great 1-year-old slideshow of Kady I had planned to show at her party (that's when my computer went haywire, go figure!) that I will upload soon.

Latest news:

Clark just returned from his annual hunting trip to Idaho with his family and friends. He shot a cougar for the first time ever! So you can expect to see a mounted cougar on our wall sometime in the next year or so.

I am leaving on Saturday for two weeks in South Africa on a YMCA study tour. I am horrified at the idea of not seeing my daughter for 2 weeks, but looking forward to seeing the YMCA mission in action around the globe.

Kady is as cute as ever! She says "hi" and "uh oh" all the time. Her favorite phrase continues to be "what's that?" as she points at everything under the sun. I can't believe she is already talking. She is the fastest crawler on the planet, which means she has no need, or desire, to walk, which is fine by me! She continues to amaze me every single day as she gets smarter and smarter.

More pix, videos and updates soon!
